When JP brought out his inner weirdness, his reach worldwide expanded exponentially. This is a great talk to inspire curiosity about our own inner weirdness.
If you haven't seen JP Sears before, his humor is designed to have a good laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves, personal development and especially spirituality so seriously. To let go and not grab onto our identity, our ego so fiercely.
Some key statements from the talk
If you are truly expressing yourself, you are expressing weirdness. If you say ‘well, I express myself but I don’t express weirdness.’ JP disagrees. You are not express yourself. You might be expressing someone else’s concepts, ideas, creativity... but it’s not yours.
There is a reason you are on this planet. To express yourself, experience yourself, embody the unique creativity of your own being. Not to be a robot here dedicated to worshipping the expression of someone else's creativity... where you might be trading your time for money, your time for approval.
There are 3 primary sources of our weirdness
- Our inner genius
- Our inner authenticity
- Our creativity
These things are unique to you. That is what makes it so valuable. What creates inherent value in anything is what makes it unique.
We do ourselves a disservice when we hide our inner genius because it makes us different from other people.
When we express ourselves, our inner unique weirdness, it’s an incredible service to ourselves. We express it because it’s exactly what makes us different from other people.
The challenge with our inner genius is it’s inside of us. It’s pretty hard to see. It’s intangible, hard to find, hard to feel. It’s a joke nature plays on us. It has to be a challenge to be expressed. A challenge to find it or else it won’t have meaning. And once you find it, it will take a hell of a lot of courage to express it.
It’s the best thing you can do for you and your brand. Don’t sell yourself a story that will limit your self expression. Don’t betray your inner weirdness, inner authenticity, inner genius.
How valuable is your weirdness in your life? Have you found out?
See if you can bring some level of weirdness to your business and see how that impacts your business.
What am I doing to myself to constrict my weirdness?
A lot of our unique weirdness is what we were shamed the most for when we were children.
What did we feel was a curse about ourselves as a kid? Can you shift your perspective to see how that weirdness can be expressed that makes you stand out in a way that makes an impact?
Along the way, your giftedness got rejected. It's those moments you make a decision to not do that again. So you move yourself towards approval. So, what do you have to do to get approval? Please them. What do you have to do to please them? Typically act like them. We have to make the decision to really betray that choice.
He or she who is willing to be the most uncomfortable is not only the bravest but rises the highest. Brené Brown.
JP adds on 'Not only the bravest but the weirdest.'
In order to express your inner genius, your weirdness, you need to be willing to risk pain
It’s a discovery process to find your weirdness. You have to be willing to experience risk, uncertainty and vulnerability.
It might just seem that expressing weirdness in your business might be the worst thing you could do, and it might be, but what if it’s the best thing you could ever do for yourself?
